Details

This is the rescheduled session following the cancellation of the original workshop due to illness. The date and registration link above follow the organisers’ announcement of 29 September 2026.

About the workshop

University rankings influence institutional strategy and research policy, but their methods, indicators and effects on research culture warrant critical examination. This interactive workshop explores how rankings incorporate Open Access, where their limitations lie and how institutions can respond more critically and transparently.

The workshop is aimed at colleagues working in research evaluation, institutional strategy, library management and Open Access. It addresses questions relevant to NAIF’s work on the responsible use of quantitative indicators in research assessment.

Programme

Three short presentations introduce complementary perspectives, each followed by a structured discussion:

  • Open Access as a performance indicator: Sophia Dörner (Göttingen State and University Library / OA Datenpraxis) examines the data sources and methodological choices behind the use of Open Access in rankings, and the implications for institutional strategy.
  • Dutch institutional perspectives: Tung Tung Chan (Erasmus University Rotterdam) shares experiences of engaging with university rankings in the Netherlands, including approaches to challenging ranking systems.
  • German institutional perspectives: Dr Sarah Spiegel (German Rectors’ Conference, HRK) discusses challenges identified through the HRK service project on international university rankings and their implications for German institutions.

Participants can share institutional experiences, compare approaches across countries and contribute to practical strategies for interpreting and responding to rankings.

Organisers and project

The workshop is jointly organised by Sophia Dörner (Göttingen State and University Library), Tung Tung Chan (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Dr Sarah Spiegel (German Rectors’ Conference, HRK) and Thed van Leeuwen (CWTS Leiden).

The findings will inform practical guidance for interpreting rankings and responding to them within institutional information management, developed through the DFG-funded OA Datenpraxis project.
